Sejarah
Kejuaraan ini pertama kali dicetuskan oleh salah satu majalah olah raga Perancis. Trofi berbentuk piala yang dijuluki "The Big Ears" (Telinga Besar),dan trofi pertama berbeda dengan yang sekarang diperebutkan (dibuat oleh Stadellman). Kejuaraan ini dimulai pada musim 1955/56 dengan menggunakan sistem gugur dua leg, yaitu setiap tim bermain dua pertandingan, satu tandang dan satu di kandang, dan tim dengan skor rata-rata tertinggi maju ke babak berikutnya. Hanya tim-tim juara liga di masing-masing negara, ditambah dengan pemegang juara pada saat itu, yang berhak ikut ajang kompetisi ini.
Format baru

Serba-serbi Champions League

Seperi Ajax misalnya, karena juara pada tahun 1971, 1972 dan 1973 di lengan baju kiri terdapat logo Liga Champions disertai dengan jumlah piala yang didapat.
Tim yang mengenakan logo Champion di lengan yaitu: Real Madrid (juara 9 kali), AC Milan (juara 7 kali), Liverpool (juara 5 kali), Bayer Muenchen (juara 74, 75 dan 76) Ajax (juara 71, 72, dan 73) dan F.C Barcelona (juara 92,06,09,dan 2011)
Dalam 19 musim terakhir, hanya ada satu tim yang berhasil mempertahankan gelar juara Liga Champions (saat itu format dan namanya masih Piala Champions) selama dua musim berturut-turut, yaitu AC Milan yang kala itu masih berpredikat The Dream Team. Namun, setelah diubah formatnya menjadi Liga Champion, belum ada satu timpun yang berhasil mempertahankan gelar juaranya. Milan dan Juventus adalah tim dalam 15 musim terakhir yang berhasil meraih final secara 3 kali berturut-turut. Milan (1993, 1994 (Juara), dan 1995) dan Juventus(1996(Juara), 1997, dan 1998).
Pada akhir musim 2004/05 terjadi masalah. Liverpool yang juara Liga Champions pada musim itu berhak lolos langsung ke babak penyisihan musim depan, namun Liverpool di liga domestik ada di peringkat lima. Everton yang merupakan peringkat 4 mengajukan protes, sehingga Liverpool dan Everton tetap ikut Liga Champions musim depan (Everton lewat kualifikasi) dan Inggris pun punya lima tim ke Liga Champions (terbanyak dalam satu negara).
Kualifikasi

Ada pengecualian pada peraturan ini; juara bertahan Liga Champions lolos secara otomatis ke babak grup tanpa tergantung posisi akhirnya di liga domestik.
